OH, JUST KILL ME NOW! SURVIVING YOUR DOG’S TEEN MONTHS

Adolescent shelter dogs have it rough.

Since most shelter adopters fall into one of two categories, those wanting a sweet little puppy and those looking for a mellow adult dog, the teens are often overlooked. Most of them are there because they are teenagers. Their previous owners bought them as puppies but were not prepared to handle them once they grew out of the fluff-ball stage and into the obnoxious, gangly stage.

If you’ve adopted an adolescent dog, congratulations! The world needs more people like you.

Or, if you started out with a puppy and are ready to brave the teen months, congratulations! The world needs more people like you.

The adolescent period starts at around six months for small dogs and nine to twelve months for big dogs. It lasts til age 18 months to two years. It’s when pups start realizing there is a world beyond you, their much-adored Favorite Person. They want to explore their environment more, seem to lose their understanding of basic obedience commands and start asking the question, “why should I?”

For people who have never before experienced the transformation of a baby puppy to a teen puppy, it can be a serious blow to the ego the first time they do. They suddenly find themselves no longer at the center of their puppy’s universe but as an afterthought somewhere along the outer edges.

So yeah. It’s a rough stage, but it can be made easier by reminding your dog who is boss – in a nice way.

Nothing in life is free, pal.

Nothing in Life is Free, or “NILIF,” is a simple but effective training method. You make your dog work for everything he gets. Before you throw the ball for him, make him sit or shake hands. Before you pet him, make him sit. If he wants to go outside, have him wait instead of barging out when you open the door. Easy, right?

If you are free-feeding your dog -that is, leaving a bowl of food out for him to pick at whenever he wants- it’s time to stop that. Instead, set up regular meal times. Two or three times per day, give him his food and pick up anything uneaten after twenty minutes. And before you give him his dish, make him work for it. Have him do a few tricks. (If he doesn’t know any tricks, now would be the time to teach some!)

You’re in charge of the most interesting things in the world.

Some dog trainers will tell their students that in order to control their dogs, they have to be the most interesting thing in the world to their dogs.

These trainers are either super human or slightly nuts.

It takes an enormous amount of energy to be the coolest thing in the world to a dog, especially when you’re are at the park and there are other dogs running around and kids on skateboards and smelly bushes and squirrels daring Fido to just try and catch them. And with an adolescent dog? You can forget about it.

So what’s a mere mortal to do?

You’re going to remind Fido that even though everything else is so much more fascinating than you, you are still relevant and he still has to listen to you. Why? Because you control his access to all that fascinating stuff. If he listens, he gets that access. If he starts ignoring you, it is taken away.

So instead of fighting with the distractions in your dog’s environment, you’re going to put them to work for you and turn the distractions into rewards.

Let’s say you’re on a walk. You want Fido to stop pulling on the leash. You have some delicious, “high value” treats with you. You plan to give him one every time he stops pulling to focus on you. One problem: he doesn’t care about the treats. What he cares about is investigating all the trees on your path. So ditch the treats. Now, insist that he acknowledges you and when he does, even for a second, let him go and sniff a few trees. Keep repeating this process, gradually increasing the time Fido has to focus on you before he can get to the trees.

Later, you get to the park and you’re trying to get Fido to sit/stay. Again, the treats aren’t working, but there are some dogs that he really wants to go meet. Make him sit/stay and then go say hello to the dogs.

Always keep your adolescent canine on leash whenever you take him out somewhere. You could probably let him roam at the park off leash when he was little. But for right now, when he is more likely to ignore you if he feels like it, keep him leashed so that he doesn’t learn that “blowing you off” is ever an option.

What does “sit” mean again?

A common phenomenon with adolescent dogs is that they seem to forget how to do stuff they used to do really well. Your four month old puppy may have been the star of his training class, but at ten months, he can’t tell “down” from “heel.” There are various theories about why this happens: some people say it’s because Fido is testing you, others say it’s due to the mind-altering affect of hormones. But whatever theory you buy into, the “treatment” is the same: keep up with basic obedience training. Now is not the time to be slacking off! If you are able to join an obedience class, that would be a good idea.

Hands down the best thing I have ever done for my dog and myself was to hire Dawn with Coast Dogs Training! 30 minutes into our first session and it was like I was walking a completely different dog! She is worth every penny and then some! If you are seriously considering training your pup, look no further!

Dawn showed me how to work with an ecollar with my 2 year old prey driven lab. I was very nervous to use the collar but Dawn educated me and made it obvious to me what I needed to do. She is very good at training the owners as well as the dog. Highly recommend her. This is my 5th lab, and I’ve had many instructors over the years. Dawn is excellent.

Where do I even start? Dawn has been the biggest blessing to our family. We lost our sweet dog several months ago and our other dog, Ruby, was heart broken. We decided to add another member to our family, Buck the Bulldog, to give Ruby some company, but it ended up bringing total chaos into our house! With the help of Dawn- Ruby has gained a ton of confidence through training and Buck the Bulldog has learned some important basic training to help reduce our chaos. Dawn did an amazing job teaching our entire family how to continue training our pups! We cannot thank Dawn enough for her dedication to our fur-babies! HIGHLY recommend her!

Completed the 6 week private training with Dawn and could not be happier. Otis the Doberman loved her and she gave me the best training tips I could hope for. Her approach is up to date and far better than so many outdated programs I have used in the past.

I’m thrilled with the Walk and Train session my pup, Rusty, has had with Dawn. I work full time and knew I would need help getting my new pup off to a good start. He was 13 weeks old when I got him and I jumped right into the 5 day/4 week session offering since I know consistency with training is key and I have limited time to dedicate to it. Rusty is normally a bit shy with people but took to Dawn immediately. Dawn worked hard to train Rusty and me (yes I needed training too). The videos she took of working with Rusty continue to be helpful when I feel uncertain about handling a command. I’m sure Rusty and I would not be in the positive state we are in with our training without these sessions. I had watched so may videos but reality of training is not like the videos. New pups are exhausting and i felt I had a great partner with Dawn as she trained and help socialize him. If you are on the fence about training, I say go for it. You will not be sorry. In my opinion it was worth every penny. It was so valuable that I’m going to continue with Dawn two days a week as I get better with training consistency on my part.

We got a little black lab, (Claire), just before Christmas. We were so happy with our new addition, were....... This little devil brought us to a new reality. We had our hands full. Countless accidents, biting, chewing, digging and soooo much more. Dawn was referred to us by a friend that I passed by downtown. She had remarkable things to say about Dawn and insisted I take her number, so I did. I made an appointment with Coast Dogs. Dawn asked me many questions over the phone and then we set an appointment. She arrived on time and we almost immediately hit it off. Shes not only good with dogs but good with people too. In essence she is training us just as much as the adorable little evil puppy, (Claire), we have. Dawn Straightened us out first, then went to work on Claire. She gave us a lot of homework, which we didn't complete at a rapid pace but we made great advances immediately. We had Coast Dogs come back a couple of weeks later and had another lesson. We worked on bell training, which has been a game changer, not nearly as many accidents but still a few because it is a puppy !!Overall I couldn't be happier with the level of professionalism, and I recommend her company to everyone I know or see. THANK YOU COAST DOGS TRAINING AND DAWN !!!Jeff and Dawn, oh and Claire

I wish I could give 10 stars! Dawn is amazing! We interviewed 3 trainers and hired 2 of them (with lessons) that didn't work out before connecting with Dawn. I can't even express how glad I am that we found Dawn! Her training style and personality fit perfectly with ours. Dawn has a special gift and connection with dogs, our Bentley (8 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) absolutely loved her. Everything about her training made sense, from start to finish, as she explained (and re-explained, if necessary). She bonded with our Bentley, he came to respect what she was teaching and he was willing to please and obey when she was with him. Dawn gave us homework each week, with handouts as reminders, and did a recap at the beginning of the following week. After training hours, she even sent us a video of her demonstrating the process with her own dog once when we couldn't quite get a certain technique. We didn't always do our homework 100%, but Dawn was able to move forward and teach Bentley the next lessons. We have a lot to learn still and it is a daily learning process for both dog and owner, but are thrilled that we met Dawn. I am already considering bringing her back for a recap and tweaking in a few months. I highly recommend Dawn and Coast Dogs, no reservations whatsoever. You will not be disappointed and you will get results.

Dawn is an extraordinarily dedicated and caring trainer who makes learning fun for both dogs and their owners. Our Samoyed pup Georgie and I looked forward to every training class! I left each session with a happy, tired-out pup, along with new insights into dog motivation and behavior. Over and over again, Dawn has gone above and beyond for our family, providing helpful suggestions and reference material about particularly challenging behavior, and following up to see if she could help further.

Highly skilled dog trainer adept at damaged dogs, basic skills or advanced training. Really enjoyed working with her. She gets to know a dog before starting the training so it's not one size fits all, very customized based on the dogs issues and personality. You can't go wrong using her.

I used Dawn at Coast Dogs for puppy training. My dog was about 8 or 10 weeks old. She is the most attentive and dedicated trainer I have used. Much patience, especially with a puppy! He did rather well and so did I since I did keep up what I was trained. He sits, comes and stays. He is now 1 1/2 years old and he is having a few issues I would like to correct. I called Dawn and she was quite helpful over the phone. Will be having more personal training with Coast Dogs in the near future. I highly recommend her services!

We hired Dawn to help us with a foster puppy with aggression issues. Dawn was professional, friendly, and was able to help us curb our puppy's issues with our elderly bulldog. I will be recommending Dawn to anyone who's dealing with behavioral issues or needs a knowledgeable, compassionate trainer.
