Dog Owner’s Guide | Finding the Right Canine Companion
Dog owner's guide to finding the right canine companion
"Piggy" (right) and friend

One of my services is helping people find the right canine match for their family. Many times this may be a rescue, a rehoused dog or a dog living in an animal shelter in Riverhead, Southold or elsewhere.  I cannot tell you how many times I have worked with families who adopted or purchased the dog that was not the right match for them. The dogs, through no fault of their own, were just horrible fits. Many end up being rehoused or going back into shelters, especially if the family is unable to train the dog properly.

Dogs living in shelters do not show who they really are due to living in and around abnormal conditions. I have seen dogs labeled "dog-aggressive" who have gone on to live wonderful lives in homes with other dogs. Additionally, I have seen dogs labeled as "good with cats" who have been returned to shelters for not liking them.  When I meet a dog in a shelter setting there are several things I look for that give me some insight into who the dog is and whether she/he is a good fit for that family. Finding the right fit is key for families and the dogs.

A Dog Owner's Guide to help you find the right canine companion:

Here are some of the things I take note of when looking for a match:

  • Does the dog come and greet me when I walk in the room?
  • Does the dog seem very quiet? (Quiet can mean the dog has "shut down".)
  • Does the dog want me to pet him/her?
  • Does the dog take a treat from me?
  • Does the dog jump on the couch next to me?
  • Does the dog give me eye contact?
  • Is the dog serious, indifferent or goofy?
  • Does the dog get startled if I make a sudden movement?
  • Does the dog get startled if I drop something?
  • How long does it take for him/her to recover from that noise?
  • How does the dog react to new things I show him/her?
  • How does the dog react when I run around making high-pitched sounds and waving my arms, like a child? (yes, I look a little nuts)
  • How does the dog react when being held and restrained for a mock vet exam?
  • Can I touch the dog's feet, ears, etc.?
  • Does the dog like toys? Does he fetch? Does he give the toy up?
  • Does the dog get over-excited when playing?
  • Can I get the dog to calm down pretty easily?
  • Do I see any guarding behaviors?
  • Can I go near the dog when he is eating, chewing on a bone or playing with a toy?
  • How does the dog walk on a leash?
  • Does the dog jump up on people?
  • Does the dog come when called?
  • How does the dog react to men/woman/children?
  • How does the dog react to stimuli when going for a walk?
  • How does the dog react when seeing another dog on a walk?
  • How does the dog react meeting another dog between a fence?
  • How does a dog react when a jogger or biker goes by?
  • How does the dog react when put in a car?
  • How does the dog react to cats, squirrels, etc?

"Piggy", once thought to be dog-aggressive now lives happily with 3 Yorkshire Terriers!

All of this is not still telling me everything about a dog, as it takes several weeks or even months of the dog settling in to his new home to actually see how he really is, but spending an hour with a strange dog in a shelter setting will give me some insight on the dog's attitude and reactions to certain stimuli. Please look closely at the breed choice and personality of the dog you're looking to take home. It's not just about looks! Selection is critical for you and for the dog.

Good luck finding your new best friend!

Local shelters to visit: Riverhead Animal Shelter, Southold Animal Shelter, Kent Animal Shelter Riverhead.

Hands down the best thing I have ever done for my dog and myself was to hire Dawn with Coast Dogs Training! 30 minutes into our first session and it was like I was walking a completely different dog! She is worth every penny and then some! If you are seriously considering training your pup, look no further!

Dawn showed me how to work with an ecollar with my 2 year old prey driven lab. I was very nervous to use the collar but Dawn educated me and made it obvious to me what I needed to do. She is very good at training the owners as well as the dog. Highly recommend her. This is my 5th lab, and I’ve had many instructors over the years. Dawn is excellent.

Where do I even start? Dawn has been the biggest blessing to our family. We lost our sweet dog several months ago and our other dog, Ruby, was heart broken. We decided to add another member to our family, Buck the Bulldog, to give Ruby some company, but it ended up bringing total chaos into our house! With the help of Dawn- Ruby has gained a ton of confidence through training and Buck the Bulldog has learned some important basic training to help reduce our chaos. Dawn did an amazing job teaching our entire family how to continue training our pups! We cannot thank Dawn enough for her dedication to our fur-babies! HIGHLY recommend her!

If you are considering a trainer for your pooch look no further . We absolutely love her approach , practices in training and her contagious energy - so do our dogs . Dawn is an expert when it comes to teaching your dogs and the owners how to achieve the best results for any needs your require for your pet. We could not be happier with the results from her guidance while training our two puppies . I can not express how thankful we are to have had Dawn as our mentor . Thank you !!!

Completed the 6 week private training with Dawn and could not be happier. Otis the Doberman loved her and she gave me the best training tips I could hope for. Her approach is up to date and far better than so many outdated programs I have used in the past.

I’m thrilled with the Walk and Train session my pup, Rusty, has had with Dawn. I work full time and knew I would need help getting my new pup off to a good start. He was 13 weeks old when I got him and I jumped right into the 5 day/4 week session offering since I know consistency with training is key and I have limited time to dedicate to it. Rusty is normally a bit shy with people but took to Dawn immediately. Dawn worked hard to train Rusty and me (yes I needed training too). The videos she took of working with Rusty continue to be helpful when I feel uncertain about handling a command. I’m sure Rusty and I would not be in the positive state we are in with our training without these sessions. I had watched so may videos but reality of training is not like the videos. New pups are exhausting and i felt I had a great partner with Dawn as she trained and help socialize him. If you are on the fence about training, I say go for it. You will not be sorry. In my opinion it was worth every penny. It was so valuable that I’m going to continue with Dawn two days a week as I get better with training consistency on my part.

We got a little black lab, (Claire), just before Christmas. We were so happy with our new addition, were....... This little devil brought us to a new reality. We had our hands full. Countless accidents, biting, chewing, digging and soooo much more. Dawn was referred to us by a friend that I passed by downtown. She had remarkable things to say about Dawn and insisted I take her number, so I did. I made an appointment with Coast Dogs. Dawn asked me many questions over the phone and then we set an appointment. She arrived on time and we almost immediately hit it off. Shes not only good with dogs but good with people too. In essence she is training us just as much as the adorable little evil puppy, (Claire), we have. Dawn Straightened us out first, then went to work on Claire. She gave us a lot of homework, which we didn't complete at a rapid pace but we made great advances immediately. We had Coast Dogs come back a couple of weeks later and had another lesson. We worked on bell training, which has been a game changer, not nearly as many accidents but still a few because it is a puppy !!Overall I couldn't be happier with the level of professionalism, and I recommend her company to everyone I know or see. THANK YOU COAST DOGS TRAINING AND DAWN !!!Jeff and Dawn, oh and Claire

I wish I could give 10 stars! Dawn is amazing! We interviewed 3 trainers and hired 2 of them (with lessons) that didn't work out before connecting with Dawn. I can't even express how glad I am that we found Dawn! Her training style and personality fit perfectly with ours. Dawn has a special gift and connection with dogs, our Bentley (8 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) absolutely loved her. Everything about her training made sense, from start to finish, as she explained (and re-explained, if necessary). She bonded with our Bentley, he came to respect what she was teaching and he was willing to please and obey when she was with him. Dawn gave us homework each week, with handouts as reminders, and did a recap at the beginning of the following week. After training hours, she even sent us a video of her demonstrating the process with her own dog once when we couldn't quite get a certain technique. We didn't always do our homework 100%, but Dawn was able to move forward and teach Bentley the next lessons. We have a lot to learn still and it is a daily learning process for both dog and owner, but are thrilled that we met Dawn. I am already considering bringing her back for a recap and tweaking in a few months. I highly recommend Dawn and Coast Dogs, no reservations whatsoever. You will not be disappointed and you will get results.

Dawn is an extraordinarily dedicated and caring trainer who makes learning fun for both dogs and their owners. Our Samoyed pup Georgie and I looked forward to every training class! I left each session with a happy, tired-out pup, along with new insights into dog motivation and behavior. Over and over again, Dawn has gone above and beyond for our family, providing helpful suggestions and reference material about particularly challenging behavior, and following up to see if she could help further.

Highly skilled dog trainer adept at damaged dogs, basic skills or advanced training. Really enjoyed working with her. She gets to know a dog before starting the training so it's not one size fits all, very customized based on the dogs issues and personality. You can't go wrong using her.

I used Dawn at Coast Dogs for puppy training. My dog was about 8 or 10 weeks old. She is the most attentive and dedicated trainer I have used. Much patience, especially with a puppy! He did rather well and so did I since I did keep up what I was trained. He sits, comes and stays. He is now 1 1/2 years old and he is having a few issues I would like to correct. I called Dawn and she was quite helpful over the phone. Will be having more personal training with Coast Dogs in the near future. I highly recommend her services!

We hired Dawn to help us with a foster puppy with aggression issues. Dawn was professional, friendly, and was able to help us curb our puppy's issues with our elderly bulldog. I will be recommending Dawn to anyone who's dealing with behavioral issues or needs a knowledgeable, compassionate trainer.
