EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT

At this appointment we will assess the behaviors your dog is exhibiting. We will determine if these behaviors are within normal range and then discuss options for training, counseling or set up a behavior change program with easy to follow instructions, handouts and additional follow up visits (if necessary).  For behaviors that are abnormal or pathological, we may refer you to a veterinarian behaviorist for further assessment.

AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIORS

What is aggression? Aggression is defined as the threat of harm to another involving growling, snapping, biting, barking, or lunging. The most common reasons for aggression is fear, stress, anxiety and frustration. Dogs can also become aggressive due to experiences, poor socialization, learned and not forgetting genetics.

Most dog aggression can be improved but NEVER CURED.  Left untreated the behavior WILL strengthen and become dangerously worse for everyone.  This program shows owners how to effectively manage their dogs while setting up a behavior change program that will greatly improve your dogs behavior.

You have to change the dogs attitude first before asking for a new behavior!

UNWANTED CANINE AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIORS
  • Guarding Food-Toys-Owner or Space
  • Over arousal
  • Owner directed (control conflict-defensive-learned) (Not Dominance )
  • Unfamiliar dogs
  • Dog in the home
  • Sibling Fighting (What is Sibling Syndrome?)
  • Redirected aggressive behavior
  • Predatory aggressive behavior
  • Fear of Strangers – Men-women-children
  • Pain-Related aggressive behavior

Please note:  Dog trainers are not behaviorists, however many can effectively help owners and help their dogs change the unwanted behaviors.

A behaviorist has a graduate degree in a related field such as Animal Science, Animal Psychology or Behavior, etc., and Certified as an Animal Behaviorist.

LOW STRESS HANDLING COURSE OR SEMINAR

This is another critical course COASTDOGS suggests. Many puppies can learn very quickly if not properly conditioned that clipping nails, having a bath, cleaning ears, going to the groomer or going to the Vet is not a pleasant experience. Before you know it you have a scared, yelping, wiggling, nipping pouty pooch on your hands. Why resort to restraint or a muzzle when you can counter-condition a pleasant response and have a far happier and relaxed dog.

2 PRIVATE HOME VISITS with handouts

2 HOUR SEMINAR FOR VETS OFFICE (call for more details)
